Amazon.com A sleeper at the time of its release in 1984, Thom Eberhardt's Night of the Comet has built a small cadre of fans thanks to its breezy performances and blend of comedy and tongue-in-cheek science fiction. Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney are thoroughly likable as a pair of San Fernando Valley sisters who find themselves completely alone after the arrival of Halley's Comet reduces their affluent community--and most of Los Angeles--to dust. Their subsequent nonstop shopping spree is soon interrupted by predatory zombies, as well as a sinister scientific cabal (led by cult favorites Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis) with designs on the girls. Stewart and Maroney are terrifically game as the heroines (especially Maroney, whose flair for bubbly comedy was never given another chance on screen), and Robert (Star Trek: Voyager) Beltran is also on hand as a fellow survivor and romantic lead. Fun for '80s enthusiasts and sci-fi fiends who don't mind a little fizz in their end-of-the-world scenarios. -- Paul Gaita

night of the comet February 15, 2010 Linda Alberthal I cant rate since it was stolen before we got a chance to see it
Good 80's fun January 12, 2010 M. Ryan Fairbanks (Cleveland, Ohio) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Night of the Comet is an extra pungent chunk of 80's cheese that is sure to bring pangs of wistful nostalgia to those that grew up in that paramount decade. For anyone else, it will prove to be good old-fashioned apocolyptic fun.
At first, Night of the Comet takes on a decidedly tongue in cheek approach, and it serves the plot very well. We witness the tale of two sisters who survive the coming of a deadly comet that reduces the human race to piles of dust. As they try to find comfort in the post apocalyptic city, they must also ward off zombies that are a product of the comet as well. From there, the film does itself a bit of a disservice by shifting to a more serious story. It seems a group of scientists have also survived the comet, and they are out to collect any survivors they can find. Not because they intend to save them, but rather because they plan to render them brain dead, using their bodies merely as a means to generate fresh blood for themselves.
Contrary to what you may have heard about Night of the Comet, this is not at all a zombie movie. Also, although Fangoria listed it as one of the "best horror movies you've never seen", it would be a bit of a stretch to even call this a horror movie. It's more of a sci-fi-comedy or a sci-fi spoof at best. Judging from a lot of the other reviews, I think Night of the Comet's strong point is largely its nostalgic value. From the mullets right down the the montage scene complete with Cyndi Lauper song, this movie is as 80's as it gets. It embodies the 80's, it breathes the 80's, it shrieks the 80's.
With low expectations, Night of the Comet is a fun time, check it out.
Girls will survive! December 20, 2009 R. hewitt (Maryland) 2 sister's left behind after a strange comet kills or mutates people of earth. They are saved only by lucky circumstances from the comets passing but things get worse as the days go by. Great movie.
Classic Fun. November 28, 2009 MickeyT (San Francisco, CA USA) This is such a great classic film that combines humor, horror, cute cast and lots of ammunition to kill the zombies with!
Cheerleaders and zombies September 5, 2009 ewak7 (Michigan, USA) Night of the Comet is a great piece of 80's sci-fi noir. How can you go wrong with "Mags" from The Last Starfighter and the cheerleader from Fast Times at Ridgemount High toting machine guns and fighting zombies? There's enough of a plot and a dose of suspense to keep you interested, while the gags and subtle, well placed jokes remind you that there's a tongue in cheek thing going on here. By the way, Spielberg probably ripped off the whole bodies turning to dust and leaving behind the clothes idea, used in this movie, in his version of War of the Worlds. (Not knocking Steven, those effects were killer.) This movie has been hard to find, glad it was finally released on DVD.
