I recently installed this on our toilet that is installed through a wood floor with radiant heat. I found this after twice having a wax seal fail. So far it is working great. I used coleman white gasoline and an comet cleanser to remove the wax from the toilet bowel. The adhesive creates a great seal and the coupling fit well into our 3" pipe.

This product is so far superior to a wax ring. I have used about 10 of them in different properties that I have owned. I have 4 in my current house. It forms a great worry-free seal. It will not collapse like a wax ring. It also solves any floor height issues created by thick stone or tile floors. Wax rings are officially obsolete!!!!!!!!!!!!
I recommend lubricating the seal with hair conditioner or lotion before setting the toilet so that it slides into the flange easily. The adhesive on the top of seal that sticks the seal to the toilet is probably sufficient but I also add a bead of silicone around to the seal after pressing it onto the bottom of the toilet. I then let that set up for a few hours before setting the toilet.

I normally would not spend the time to write a product review, but this thing is so brilliant, it deserves my time. Simply put, this is the FOOLPROOF way to install your toilet. When done, you will have 100% peace of mind, and know that there will be no problems with the install. With the traditional method of wax rings, there is a lot that can go wrong - especially if you are not a plumber, and only install a toilet once in a great while. There can be a small, imperceptible leak if you use a wax ring and don't get it just right... it will leak a few drops of contaminated water at the base each time you flush, as the water passes through the trap and into the waste line. Over time, this small leak will rot the floor, the subfloor, and even the floorboards resting on the joists. This has happened to me in the past, and trust me, you do not want to spend your weekend tearing up rotting, moldy floorboards, and then trimming replacement boards to fit around the flange/waste line.
That will NOT happen with the Wax Free Toilet Seat. This thing sticks onto the toilet with strong adhesive, and once the toilet is in place, it's impossible for the seal to ever come off, because the weight of the toilet holds it in place. Simple, brilliant, and a must have for anybody who is installing a toilet. I have even spoken to professional plumbers who have trouble with wax rings leaking from time to time, so why take the chance? Use this thing, and know that you get the job done right, the first time. Another big plus is if you ever want to replace the toilet itself, there will be no mess! Unlike with a wax ring, which is a nightmare to clean up.
Great job, Fernco. I recommend this seal to anybody and everybody who has a toilet to install, regardless of their skill level.

I had high hopes for this product after reading the glowing reviews here. I'd never replaced a wax seal before and the Fernco FTS-3 seemed like the best product for the job. The concept is great -- I'd much rather have a strong adhesive bond from the toilet to this tube, and a secure seal between this tube and the drainpipe, than to depend upon a wax ring to squish into an appropriate shape.
Unfortunately I was very disappointed in the design of the product. The rubber ring with the adhesive on it is not very wide, so there is not a lot of contact area between the ring and the toilet. My toilet has a curve near the downspout, and that seems to have prevented the FTS-3 from achieving a good seal. I tried installing it anyway (at this point, what did I have to lose?) and it leaked badly. I'd spent an hour or two cleaning off all the old wax with rags & solvents, so I'm positive it was clean enough to have sealed properly if the surface had been perfectly flat.
Also, I wasn't as impressed with the adhesive as other reviewers. After I gave up on it, I removed it from the toilet and found it required a lot less force than I'd expected.
I gave it 2 stars because it's probably great for a brand new toilet where you can confirm the underside is flat, but I wouldn't consider this for a retrofit unless you're willing to pull the toilet up to check before ordering.
As a postscript, I don't know why I was so reluctant to use the old-fashioned wax ring. I picked one up at a nearby hardware store, put it on the toilet, set the toilet down to squish it into place, and it was done. Leak-free in about 15 minutes.
