Good Shredder February 8, 2010 Riverseow (Texas, USA) I bought this mainly for shred many palm tree leaves. It does the job very good and I like it. It took me a while to assemble it (thanks to the great user review here by u12soccercoach). When I first use it, it tends to jam a lot and I need to open it to drag all the tangled fibers from the palm tree leaves. I got it smoked twice. I thought I broke it. Later, I found that I just need to feed it slower. I also roll the palm tree leaves in a bundle and feed it through the side trunk feeder hole. It seems better by this way. Another trick is keep watching the out port. If no chips coming out. Stop feeding and use a small stick to poke to remove the jammed stuff before you feeding more. Overall, I am very happy with the product.
shredder February 1, 2010 M. Herrin (georgia) my mother-in-law wanted this for Christmas last year. I haven't heard her complain about it so apparently it's a good piece of equipment.

The chipper/shredder works satisfactorily. The chipper function is very good. The shredder function is only so-so since it is difficult to feed the leaves through the loading hopper.
leaf munching for small branches January 8, 2010 camaikman 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this machine works great and is VERY sturdy. However, unless the leaves are very dry, the mulcher will clog regularly and the branches need to be smaller for the chopper to work at its best...so if you have a heavy wooded area, this may not be the shredder for you.
Even mulches its own blades! January 3, 2010 N. D. Bradley (Santa Barbara, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have a love-hate relationship with my McCulloch MCS2001 chipper/shredder. I have used this McCulloch model for the past year to chip yard waste, after having used a gasoline-powered Craftsman 8.5 hp chipper/shredder for years before that. The differences between the two are huge, but my original reasons for switching to an electric-powered model (noise, smaller footprint, etc.) were largely borne out with this model. I'll keep this review short and sweet by explaining the good and the bad features:
The Good Stuff
Overall, this is a wonderfully designed model that takes up little space, runs much quieter than a gasoline-powered model, and (usually) chips like a pro. We live in Central California where the chaparral grows thick and mean. If you live in this kind of country, you know what I'm talking about: native scrub oak; sage brush; herbaceous shrubs; and--that gnarliest of native American hardwoods--manzanita, which is one of the hardest and densest woods found anywhere. So, to be fair, our McCulloch has been put to the test and then some. When it's chipping face is on, this little chipper really performs and chops through our chaparral trimmings like they're noodles. It's not as fast as a larger, gasoline-powered model, but it's SO nice to be able to feed trimmings to something that just gently hums along instead of sounding like a Formula One race track. When it's time to put it away, it takes up one-third the space of our old Craftsman monster. The electric cord has never been a problem; we simply use a long cord that runs from the house to the work site, and we have never tripped the circuit breaker.
The Bad Stuff
One word: metalurgy. I don't know if it's because of where this unit is manufactured, or whether someone just doesn't care, but there are a LOT of metalurgical goobers and boo-boos. Look beneath the cowling, and the sheet metal welds are full of splatters and gas pockets. Perhaps it's because there are plenty of tight, inside corners, where an electric welder tends to arc unpredictably, but then if the manufacturer knew what they were doing they would either use plasma needle arc welders and/or use wire-fed welders with more precise amperage controls (or simply hire better welders). In any case, the inside welding is horrendous. But the real downer--the one that kills it for me--is the inferior V-blade that is mounted atop the spindle. It appears to be a stamped and hydraulically pressed blade that has no heat treating or stress relief. (It ought to be drop forged, preferably from thicker and stronger steel.) The result is a weakened blade that flies apart...again, and again, and again. Unfortunately, when one of these cheapo blades breaks loose, the McCulloch tries to mulch the shattered blade along with whatever plant material has been fed into it. The result is not pretty: depending upon how quickly you reach for the off switch, the otherwise-excellent horizontal blades are soon chipped as the machine attempts to mulch chunks of metal from the broken blade. And these blades are not cheap to replace! To make matters worse, the stock machine bolt that is used to fasten the V-bade to the horizontal flywheel and spindle is inferior too. The first time my McCulloch broke, it was the bolt that sheared, not the blade. I went down to an auto parts store and bought a proper, case-hardened bolt as a replacement--the bolt never broke again (but the V-blades did). The original spindle bolt showed obvious internal stresses where it sheared and looked like something you'd use to bolt down a garden gnome, not a high-torque chipper blade.
The Final Verdict
IF the McCulloch MCS2001 didn't come with such a low-quality V-blade that constantly breaks due to inferior metal fabrication, this would be a really great chipper/shredder. Unfortunately, either the manufacturer doesn't care about important details, or they are making buku bucks from spare parts and planned obsolescence. If I had to do it all over again, I would purchase a better (if more expensive) electric chipper/shredder because I have already paid the difference in replacement parts.
