Amazon.com Product Description Neither deep foliage nor steep canyons will faze the rugged Garmin eTrex Legend HCx navigator. Equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, the unit locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the Legend HCx to help you find your way when you need it the most. Adding maps to the Legend HCx is easier than ever thanks to the device's microSD card slot, which accepts cards preloaded with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and the Legend HCx will provide turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Plus, the card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you needn't worry about it getting wet. Besides appreciating its small size, users will also be happy with the Legend HCx's unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Legend HCx is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. This makes it easy to distinguish map details regardless of the time of day. The Legend HCx basemap, meanwhile, contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Other details include an IPX7 waterproof housing that withstands inclement weather, a speedy USB interface, 1,000 waypoints with names and graphic symbols, a track log with 20 saved tracks, a hunt/fish calendar, a built-in patch antenna, and a geocaching mode. The Legend HCx, which runs for up to 25 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.2 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty. What's in the Box eTrex Legend HCx, basemap, MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager software, USB cable, wrist strap, quick start guide, user's manual.

great transacion. January 22, 2010 mts Bought if for a gift and got it in plenty of time. Have not heard any reports yet on how great it is. He is probably still reading the manual.....every page. I own a Garmin , two actually, and I love them.
Compact, reliable GPS December 1, 2009 Garrett Stevens (Montana, USA) This GPS unit is light, compact, bright and fairly easy to use. It's my first GPS, so I don't have a lot of background with comparable models. There are a few key features that stand out about this Legend HCx unit though, listed here as the pros.
Pros:
One handed operation. The unit is easy to use with one hand, leaving the other free to do whatever is needed.
Bright screen. With the brightness all the way up, the screen is easy to read, even in direct sunlight. The zoom gives a good clear visual of your position.
Strong antennas. The unit gets a good signal in deep woods (tested rigorously this hunting season) and will even catch a decent signal in my living room.
The menu options are pretty intuitive and fairly easy to navigate, but this brings me to the cons of this unit.
Cons:
Instruction manual is HORRIBLE. There are very few detailed instructions, other than on how to insert the battery. Most of the instructions focus on MapSource data, which is not something that comes standard with the unit. The basemap is OK, but the instructions give virtually no good information on how to use the unit. The QuickStart guide is just as detailed as the manual, which was very frustrating for me as a new GPS user.
You have to purchase MiniSD cards for map additions. You can buy the preloaded cards, which are very detailed and accurate (I used the Mountain North with good results) but it's an additional cost and you cannot transfer maps from the MiniSD cards to your computer for route/waypoint management. I suppose the alternative is to buy a blank card, buy the maps from Garmin, and manage it all on your computer, but that seems a little inelegant.
All in all, it's a nice unit that works well. I'm still figuring out all the bells and whistles, but after a few days of use I feel very confident with the Legend HCx.
Excellent GPS for geocaching November 19, 2009 Judith A. Kling (New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Was using a very cheap GPS unit from the school. Looked for one that wasn't terribly expensive, but would work in tree cover and be much more accurate in pinpointing location. This one works nicely. I did purchase the road maps for it, so that we can drive and then hike in to find the cache. It's not a unit you'd want to use by yourself when driving. You have to look at the tiny screen too much - worse distraction than a cell phone.
expectations not met November 4, 2009 TnT (Arlington, Tx) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My first impression was great product. After using for two trips the flaws are coming out. First, the base map is so basic it's not usable as a handheld should be used out of the city and on the trail. Plan on spending nearly 100.00 to upgrade maps and use the Etrex. Secondly, the toggle/enter button protrudes out so far that it is accidentally hit a lot. Produst does seem durable and I hope I grow to like it. Garmin does make great products for the car. I guess I was expecting a NUVI type GPS in my handheld.

Fun for a Novice November 2, 2009 D. E. H. (Maine USA) I bought this unit primarily for geocaching, which I've recently taken up. The unit finds satellites quickly whether outside, inside, or in the car. Degree of accuracy is high. The unit is light weight and fits into a pants pocket or jacket pocket. The controls are easily used with one hand. The owner's manual could be more detailed, requiring greater time than should be the case to use some of the features. The unit has many more features than I need for geocaching, but I expect that I will expand my range of use during the warmer months when I will learn how to use it for navigation while sailing off the Maine coast. Although I cannot compare this unit to those of other manufacturers, the unit has met all my expectations.
